Completed in 2003, it was maybe the most prestigious building on the historical coal-mining Zollverein site (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001). The 35m x 35m x 35m cube by SANAA, housing the Zollverein School of Management and Design: a business school for the creative disciplines, aiming to “confront, link and integrate corporate management and creativity.” 150 students could apply for a MBA degree, the school’s tuition fee is about 20,000 euro.
According to the German news portal “derWesten” (08.10.2008) the school has run out of money. The remaining nine students have to change to the Duisburg-Essen university. Classes will continue till January 2009. It is unclear why the Zollverein School might have failed – honestly - I haven't got a clue about the school’s content of teaching. It's a pity - it was a great building, but it always looked somehow hollow.

Kind of ironic it's a business school going out of business...
Like your blog a lot. Hello, from Costa Rica, via Miami, Florida,
No problem, now they can declare this piece also as heritage. But certainly it revoked the age old debate of content vs architecture. How long can architecture sustain the slavery of fantasies of architect :)
Anyway I do think it is a magnificient building. Kazuyo Sejima explained it a short time ago in barcelona and despite her "fantasies" the result is good.
