Space.

Politics, globalisation, economy and technology are influencing space – the classical experience of space has radically changed. On the one hand architecture is eroding, on the other hand new tasks appear from nowhere.

"Is architecture up to this?", Charlie Rose asked.

Koolhaas: "I used to think no – architecture is an incredibly old fashioned profession with a 3000 year old history – at the same time we have to be formalists, reasonably artistic, political, economical – so it's also a profession that covers an incredibly amount of sometimes contradictive sciences or knowledge – basically this width in current circumstances may save architecture – it's one of the few disciplines that works and teaches that width. It's still based on that."

Rem still can make architecture look sexy, can’t he? See his and other interviews on archinect.
